Courtyard by Marriott Freiburg

We had a phenomenal stay here! All of the staff were very kind and helpful. Enrico was particularly welcoming and helpful when we checked in! The breakfast was very good. The bed was very new and comfortable. And it was very easy to walk all around the Altstadt from here!

Disappointing stay – a reasonable request was not addressed I stayed for two nights during unusually warm weather (around 28–30°C). The air conditioning was not sufficient to keep the room comfortably cool, and the waterproof polyurethane mattress protector made the bed feel extremely hot and uncomfortable. After the first night, I explained the problem to reception and specifically asked if the waterproof protector could be removed or replaced with a more breathable mattress protection. I believe this was a reasonable request, particularly in such warm weather. Unfortunately, I was told that it could not be removed. Instead, an additional mattress topper was provided, which did not solve the problem and, in my experience, made the bed even warmer. I woke around 3–4am on the second night feeling extremely hot and sweating, and could not sleep properly. My main disappointment was that, although I clearly explained the problem to reception during my stay, my reasonable request was not properly addressed. For a Marriott property, I expected better attention to a guest’s comfort and concerns.

Less then decent. I'm only giving it 2 stars as they were "nice" enough to give me a late checkout, but honestly, I would not recommend this hotel unless you only spend 1-2 nights in Freiburg and you are a solo traveler. The rooms are decently sized, but very outdated. They are covered with those old-style clasic hotel carpets, and the room was not very clean. Not dirty but could be better. The carpet also doesn't make it better. Noise: You hear every single noise from the corridor. In fact you hear noise from other rooms that aren't even next to you. One family was screaming at the end of the hall at night, and we were able to hear it. The location is also good on paper. You have everything you need by foot. Its literally on the Freiburg HBF. Its great if you use the DB rails or S bahn, not great when you take the Trams (and you most likely will take the tram much more). The Freiburg HBF trams are about 7 min away, as you need to get to the bridge at the other side of the station. The other nearest station (Stadttheater) is also about 7-8 min away, but then you have to go through the group of drug addicts that sit at the park next to hotel, esp at night. Overall the area has a lot of weird people and I wouldn't recommend it to families or women traveling alone. Not their fault, but something to point out. The hotel has practically no lobby. The whole lobby is the hotel own resturant. One of the nights my family fell asleep early and I wanted to eat my take out. Sitting outside the hotel is not a practical due the area, but sitting at the Lobby the hotel gave me the feeling I shouldn't be there. We also had to call the reception daily to give us fresh towels. Overall: I don't recommend it.

Great hotel and location. Gym needs a chin and dip bar / station and more than 20kg on the dumbells though.
