# San Mamés Stadium

## Overview

## Discover La Catedral of Bilbao

**San Mamés Stadium** is more than a football ground. Set in **Bilbao**’s Basurto-Zorroza district, it is the proud home of Athletic Club and one of the city’s most powerful symbols of Basque football culture. Known affectionately as La Catedral, the stadium blends sporting tradition, local identity and striking modern architecture in a destination that feels meaningful even when no match is taking place.

Matchdays bring an unforgettable atmosphere, with passionate supporters creating a lively but welcoming experience throughout the stands. Even seats high in the stadium offer excellent views, while the semi-transparent exterior panels give the building a distinctive appearance that changes with the light and the occasion. Its highly transparent retractable roof provides shelter from Bilbao’s rain while still allowing natural light into the venue, adding to the comfort of the experience.

For visitors who want to look beyond the stands, **guided stadium tours** offer an engaging introduction to Athletic Club’s history, philosophy and connection to the city. Tours may include access to areas rarely seen during a match, and the approachable guides make the experience informative and relaxed. The on-site shop is another useful stop, with helpful staff and official club merchandise for supporters of all ages.

With a devoted following of more than 31,000 football fans, San Mamés is a must-see **Basque football heritage** destination. Whether you attend a match, explore the stadium on tour or simply admire its bold design, this celebrated event venue captures the spirit of Bilbao with energy, pride and a strong sense of place.
