in the last weekMy daughter was doing the Great North Run and we needed to be staying centrally not too far from the start line. My usual ‘go to’ for a hotel in an area I’m not familiar with would be a Premier Inn. But having looked at the Sandman website, I really liked the look of their hotel in Newcastle and decided to book that instead. We had a lovely stay for 2 nights and were so pleased with everything! When we checked in it was busy with other runners arriving, but we didn’t wait long and Ben on reception was polite and helpful. The room was lovely and clean. It had a little kitchenette perfect for our needs, a choice of a hand held shower or a large overhead one from the ceiling in the bathroom and very comfortable beds with Glencraft mattresses for a great nights sleep. It was thoughtful and a really nice touch that they had a table in reception full of bananas, bottled water and snacks on the morning of the race itself! This was much appreciated by ourselves and all the runners on the way to the race. Breakfast on both days was delicious and plentiful, with a good choice of what to eat and everything was kept so clean. A perfect start to the day really. But what made our stay so good overall was the hotel team. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone was so polite, cheerful and helpful if we had a question or needed anything. A special mention for Marcus, the manager who was on the evening to morning shift on both days we stayed. He was always cheerful, professional and polite and gave me some really useful information about the local area. He is a real credit to Sandman as an organisation and worthy of recognition. All in all we were very happy and have already booked for next year. I will definitely use the Sandman on future visits to Newcastle.

in the last weekA nice enough stay, we’ve stayed here several times in the last few years. The hotel is in need of a refresh, the decor is a little dated and paint is chipped. The bed was comfy, but carpets and general appearance didn’t feel totally clean. For a four star hotel I’d expect mush more, including coffee machines in rooms instead of instant. The shark bar closed at 9.30 on Sunday evening, this felt too early.

in the last weekComfortable bed but do not book if you need a good night's sleep on the Saturday. If on the side facing st James park the restaurant opposite is open topped a d on the 8th floor with windows shut the music was audible and disruptive until it finished at midnight
