Good food, but the overall concept doesn't quite work for a Michelin-starred restaurant.
Culinary-wise, there's absolutely nothing to complain about – the food is truly good and definitely a highlight. The presentation on the plate is excellent. Unfortunately, the overall package didn't convince me for the price. For a Michelin-starred restaurant, the overall concept simply doesn't work for me, as both the ambiance feels extremely cold and the staff are very distant and aloof. When you spend that much money on a meal, you simply expect a bit more warmth, hospitality, and a welcoming atmosphere. So, for this price, it just wasn't for me.
A fantastic Michelin-starred restaurant. It was our first time dining in the Michelin-starred area, and we felt very well taken care of. The service was very friendly and not at all intrusive. We were seated outside and then shown around. The only downside was the flies and mosquitoes, which seemed to want a piece of the food too. The surprise menu consisted of five courses, and with desserts and an amuse-bouche, we had a total of eight courses. You should definitely allow yourself plenty of time. I can't understand the other reviews, though. Yes, it takes four to five hours for everything to be ready. But you're in good hands, the atmosphere is lovely, and you spend time with your loved ones. So why the complaints?
I can't comment on the food itself, as I haven't been to any other Michelin-starred restaurants before. But it was good.
The food was good, no question! But over four hours for five courses is definitely too long. We didn't receive a satisfactory answer to our questions, or those of other guests. The outdoor table also had a bit of a beer garden feel, including a clear view of a broken basketball hoop, an unkempt garden, and an open bathroom window. Over four hours was definitely too long for that as well. In contrast to our last visit, we weren't impressed overall.
We were at Bilster Berg racetrack over the weekend and, looking for a good restaurant, found Balthasar in Paderborn using the Michelin Guide. Booking through their website was straightforward, and we had a truly wonderful evening with fantastic hosts and top-notch Michelin-starred food. Wow! Everything was incredibly delicious. You can order as much as you like from the menu, and the entire team is consistently friendly, charming, and attentive, especially the owner. It's a shame we don't live nearby. We would definitely go to Balthasar more often.
