We waited forever for the food, and the service overlooked so many details that we simply lost our appetite. Bottles weren't opened, broken glasses were served, and empty lightbulbs weren't replaced. These are just a few examples.
Bellpepper used to be one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in Mainz in terms of food quality. I say this because for many years I regularly came for brunch with my family, for business lunches, for breakfast, and even for events where food was served. These days, it's the complete opposite. You pay a fair amount of money, and you expect corresponding quality and flavor. In previous years, the brunch was unbeatable, both in terms of service and overall experience. The kitchen and service teams were top-notch in those years, specifically from 2016 to 2023.
The food simply doesn't taste the same anymore, and my children, who used to come with me for several years and are now 39 and 34, agree. From Caesar salad to grass-fed beef fillet to burgers and everything else, the food is just not the same. Unfortunately, the service has also declined significantly, and the company's standards seem to have been lost. I miss all the staff from those golden years.
A lovely atmosphere with attentive, friendly service that makes your stay pleasant, and of course, delicious food. Naturally, everything comes at a price.
I found the restaurant through an app that calculates calories based on photos. The mashed potatoes with fried onions fit perfectly into my budget and didn't taste like diet food at all. The decor is modern and very simple.
What was once an excellent restaurant has unfortunately become something that disappoints all too often.
A questionable combination.
The former balancing act between small, delicious, and delicately presented appetizers and the best steakhouse in town, featuring a superb 450g entrecote, is gone.
Although the meat now comes from Germany, the slices have become far too thin due to the weight being reduced over the years.
Furthermore, it's poorly cooked and tough, and the doneness is off.
We were a party of four, and three out of seven dishes went back.
The service was slow and inattentive.
At least they were accommodating with the bill, offering a complimentary shot of schnapps and a portafilter espresso (after we pointed it out and asked for it; otherwise, at Bellpepper, it comes from a machine).
Six years ago, this was my go-to restaurant, but the return of Sven Ole Hastreiter hasn't brought any improvement...
