Me and my husband booked Novotel Ipswich for two nights as we were attending a wedding, but were moved to a B&B because priority was given to a football team.
The B&B was okay, but it was not what we had booked or expected from a 4-star hotel. The room was uncomfortable, the pillows were poor, our room wasn’t cleaned between nights, and the breakfast was disappointing.
We raised our concerns with management, including the fact that we had been moved to accommodation of a lower standard. No refund or price difference was offered, despite us paying for a stay at Novotel.
We understand that busy events can create challenges, but guests with confirmed bookings should still feel valued. Unfortunately, this was not the experience we expected from Novotel and the customer service was very disappointing.
We booked and paid £178.34 for two nights at Novotel Ipswich, with our booking confirmed in advance as we were attending a wedding. Unfortunately, due to the football game taking place this week, we were moved to a local B&B because, as we were told, priority was being given to the football team.
This was extremely disappointing. We specifically booked a 4-star Novotel, and being moved to a completely different type of accommodation was not what we had paid or agreed to.
When we questioned the difference in price, the manager at Novotel told us there was no difference to refund. However, we met another couple who had made the same booking but were paying on arrival. They were also moved to the same B&B and told us they paid £68 per night, including breakfast. This makes it very difficult to understand how there was supposedly no difference in value, given that we had paid £178.34 for two nights at Novotel.
The B&B itself was acceptable as a B&B, but it simply did not provide the standard or experience we expected when booking a 4-star hotel. The room was not particularly comfortable, and the pillows were especially poor as we could actually feel the filling inside them. As a result, we had a bad night's sleep on both nights.
The room was also not cleaned between our two nights, which was disappointing, and the breakfast was poor.
Overall, our main issue is not with the B&B itself, but with the fact that we paid for a confirmed stay at a 4-star hotel and were moved elsewhere without what we feel was a fair adjustment in price or compensation.
We understand that major events can create pressure on hotel availability, but customers who have already booked and paid should not feel that their reservation is less important because a football team needs rooms.
Unfortunately, this experience left us feeling that our booking was not valued and that we did not receive what we paid for. We would expect much better communication, transparency and customer service from a hotel of this standard.
Unprofessional and discourteous staff. We encountered outright rude behavior from the front desk team when asking standard questions. Basic hospitality standards were completely ignored. Save your money and book elsewhere.
