A brief summary at the beginning, perhaps this will make it easier for the owner to read the reviews.
We were a fairly large group of about 11 people. A little over half of the group had already arrived before us.
Even when we made the reservation by phone, the owner was very unfriendly and practically yelled at us, asking how many more people were coming.
When we arrived, we weren't given a menu.
The wait was astronomically long. We waited over two hours for our food, which we ultimately didn't even receive (we only ordered four pizzas).
When we asked about our food after waiting an hour, the owner just made a rude comment and a lame excuse.
People who arrived at other tables after us were served before us.
End of summary.
When we arrived, we weren't given any menus. They immediately tried to take our drink order. Upon request, the owner gave us the menus (I should mention I was on my phone trying to access the digital menu) with the ridiculous comment, and I quote, "No phones allowed here," which wouldn't be so bad in itself, except that another person at our table already had their phone out, and no one said anything to them. But okay, maybe it was just a bad joke. We ordered drinks and food at the same time. The drinks arrived in a reasonable amount of time, but the food didn't. We ordered four pizzas. After 30 minutes, we were served dry, cold bread with some olives and a bit of herb butter as an appetizer, but still no food. An hour later, still no food. Then we asked when our food would arrive and noticed that everyone else at the table had already finished eating. The owner then said, "Well, you'll have to wait! Your friends ordered before you; they shot the first rabbit. We still have three tables ahead of you to serve!" That's when I remarked that waiting an hour is extremely long, no matter how good the food is. Our friends convinced us to stay because the food looked and smelled good. After waiting for a total of two hours, we asked a waitress that we were still waiting for our food. She acted clueless and said to us, surprised, "What? You haven't received your food yet?!" Then she ran to the manager, who was arguing with the staff and pointed at our table. From then on, we were completely ignored. The waiters deliberately took detours to avoid our table. We'd finally had enough. We paid for our drinks and told the manager that this was a disaster. We also pointed out the other reviews that had reported similar experiences. Then the manager had the audacity to deny these reviews and accuse us of never having read them. No apology, no compensation, no greeting. The worst restaurant experience I have ever had!
A solid Italian restaurant with heart and great service!
The Hugo restaurant on Pastorstraße has become a true institution in Gelsenkirchen, housed in the premises of a former discotheque/pub that many remember fondly from their youth.
The food is consistently good. While it might not be top-tier gourmet dining, you can enjoy a truly good and welcoming meal here. The selection is good, and everyone was thoroughly satisfied with their dishes.
The dining room meets classic Italian restaurant standards. It's not super fancy, and in some places, you can see that it's showing its age, but that doesn't detract from the overall experience. The service is consistently friendly and attentive, and they cater very well to the guests' needs.
We were there with a large group and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Since the restaurant is very popular and often full, you should definitely reserve a table in advance.
If you're looking for an honest, good Italian restaurant in Gelsenkirchen, Hugo is the perfect choice!
