2 weeks agoAs an educated well travelled African woman who studied in Salamanca, Spain and who is also a soccer fan I wanted to experience the World Cup final in a Spanish setting. I made a booking for my son for Sunday’s game and I and unfortunately I had a very disappointing experience at the Spanish Tavern in Newark. First we waited about 20 minutes , we standing there just waiting to be seated even with a reservation.I can understand they were busy… when we finally got seated, we were just left there luckily I had asked for a bottle of sparking water. We were not given the menu, nada for about 15 minutes. The table right next next to us was empty but then 3 customers that look like them were seated. Interestingly enough it didn’t take long for them to get the menu and they even had the server come and get their order. At that stage I told my son this is too much we must leave and go watch the game elsewhere which is what we did. On my way out, I told one of the server that this was unacceptable,, we were treated differently because of our race. The way we were ignored from the beginning then just left there at a table were noticeably different from how other customers who look like them were treated. This left me feeling unwelcome and disrespected. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their background. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, looks into what happened, and works to ensure all customers receive fair and respectful treatment.
