The Herbert Hotel is a practical and well-located San Francisco hotel for travelers who want to stay close to the action without paying premium rates. Set near Powell Street, it puts shops, restaurants, public transport, and major city attractions within easy reach, making it a convenient home base for sightseeing and business trips alike. Guests often highlight the balance of great location, fair pricing, and roomy accommodations that give them space to unwind after a busy day.
The rooms are frequently described as spacious and comfortable, with useful touches like a coffee machine, mini fridge, desk, and fast WiFi. Many travelers also appreciate the building’s old San Francisco character, including brick details that give it a classic feel. While some guests note street noise or dated finishes, the overall impression is of a solid, good-value stay in a prime location. For visitors who prioritize accessibility, practicality, and a straightforward place to sleep in the center of the city, this lodging option remains a dependable choice in downtown San Francisco.
The hotel is centrally located, providing easy access to transport and main attractions, which is appreciated by guests.
Despite being in a central location, the hotel is relatively quiet, allowing for a peaceful stay.
Multiple reviews highlight significant cleanliness problems, including uncleaned rooms and stained towels, which detract from the overall experience.
Guests report broken power sockets, lights, and rickety beds, raising safety concerns that are not adequately addressed by the staff.
Complaints about inadequate responses to issues and lack of staff presence suggest poor customer service and a lack of attention to guest needs.
Several guests feel the hotel is overpriced given the disappointing standards and lack of cleanliness.

a week agoDo not even bother. This is the most disgusting apartment I have ever stayed in. It's so poorly kept and there has been ZERO attempt to clean it. Even when complaining they do the absolute bare minimum to fix anything. Please book anything else this place is disgusting. Some photos for example

a week agoDecent for what it is. Good location and relatively quiet. We had 2 queens and our own bathroom/shower. Unstaffed, essentially, but not a problem on our end, and we even had an issue with the room which was resolved.

2 weeks agoPro: centrally located to transport and main attractions. Cons: disappointing standards. Yes, the hotel is on the cheaper side, not the cheapest in the area. You need to check in with the sister hotel nearby - my guess is to save staffing costs. Not the biggest hassle. Room very tired. Broken power sockets (dangerous), stained towels, broken lights, rickety bed. Not cleaned adequately (hairs from previous guest in bathroom). Shampoo and conditioner watered down (bring your own). Weird small square pillows. There is a connecting door to another room - you’ll probably need to ask the other guests to be quiet (unless you are the noisy ones). I wrote to the hotel about the serious safety concerns with no reply.
